If you’re interested in gardening and you belong to any part of the world, a gardening hose will always be a part of your gardening arsenal as it is one of the essential tools available for a gardener and is the most used tool in the gardening category. It is almost used every day. A gardening hose or simply called a hose, is a long tube or a pipe made of plastics or rubber, which is flexible and is used to essentially transfer water from the storage to the plants in the garden. A hose can be used to transfer water at a point or disperse it, also known as sprinkling or spraying. Hoses fill the bridge between the water storage and the plants in the garden as one end of the hose is connected to a tap, and the other end is connected to an attachment that disperses water to the plants. A gardening hose is a versatile tool as it majorly is used for transferring water. Therefore, it can be used not only for watering plants but also for cleaning vehicles, buildings, pet animals, etc. In addition, some hoses that are safe to transfer potable water can connect the water flowing from a storage to a faucet.

Garden hoses are made up of several types of materials based on their applications. But the most common material used is soft plastic polymers or vulcanised rubber. This ensures that the pipes are flexible in nature, and therefore, it is easy to manoeuvre with them across the garden. In addition, it has certain structural additions such as rims and/or webs in order to provide more support. These are made from the same material or a fusion of different materials. This ensures that the hose is durable during their use and they have a larger lifespan and it prevents them from getting bent, bruised and so on. The classification of the garden hose can be made based on the type of material used to create the garden hose. The types are listed below as follows:

  • Vinyl Type Hose: A vinyl type hose uses a polymer vinyl chloride to manufacture these hoses. They are available in bulk and are the most generic type of hose system available and therefore is the least expensive type. The webbing inside the hose is made up of nylon, and therefore it is substantially more durable. It is also safe to utilise this to transfer potable water.
  • Polyurethane Type Hose: A polyurethane type hose is inherently lightweight and does not bend as much. This is due to the stiffness property of polyurethane. Therefore, it is mostly applicable for instances where the hose needs to have high endurance.
  • Rubber Type Hose: Rubber type hose are, as the name suggests, made from rubber. However, in order to make the rubber more durable, they are subjected to vulcanisation. They are also rimmed with nylon in order to increase their durability and endurance in the garden. They are also known to be very pliable.
  • Polymer Type Hose: Polymer type garden pipes are made using various types of polymers. They are produced based on the requirements and the constraints set by a specific task or operation. These hose types vary in their properties based on the combination of different polymers used when manufacturing the hose. They are known for their agility, durability as well as lightweight. In addition, they do not crease or bend.
  • Metal Type Hose: A metal type hose is rimmed using metal brackets around a pipe to protect the core pipe of the water. These types of hose do not bend; however, they can be subjected to dents which can reduce the pipe’s agility. But these can be very expensive.
  • Expandable Type Hose: The expandable type garden hose pipe is a conglomerate of different types of hoses explained above, along with nodes that can be used to connect two pipes to form a larger pipe. These can be bent easily and are commonly made of durable, stretchy material.
